Colorado Fall Colors Frequently Asked Questions
If you’re trying to figure out when fall colors peak in Colorado, where to go, and how to plan your trip, this covers the questions I see asked most commonly.
When is the best time to see fall colors in Colorado?
Fall colors typically peak from mid-September through early October, starting at higher elevations and moving lower. Exact timing changes every year. → See
When to See Fall Colors in Colorado? (Peak Foliage Timing Guide) for a full breakdown.
What is the best week to visit Colorado for fall colors?
The last week of September into the first week of October is usually the most reliable window to see peak color somewhere in the state. This is usually in the western part of the state (Aspen, Crested Butte, or the San Juan Mountains.)
Where should I go for fall colors in Colorado?
That depends on when you’re visiting—different regions peak at different times. → See Where to See the Best Fall Colors in Colorado (By Region) for a full breakdown.
How long do fall colors last?
Expect 7–10 days from first color change to peak, but that is under ideal conditions. Once peak arrives, the window can be very short, usually only lasting 3-5 days at full color. This can change very quickly with wind and storms.
Can I plan a fall trip around exact dates?
Not exactly. Timing shifts every year, so it’s better to pick a general window and stay flexible on location. If you're traveling to Colorado, the last week of September is most reliable, however you will need to remain flexible on where to go to make sure you hit peak.
