As your constituent, I’m writing to urge you to oppose the final version of the budget bill that sells off our public lands..

This mandates the sale of up to 1.2 million acres of public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) over the next 10 years. These sales would target lands within five miles of any town with 1,000 or more people, opening the door to widespread privatization near hundreds of communities across the West.

These are some of the most accessible and beloved public lands in the country. They offer affordable opportunities for hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, and accessing local trails. They are also a vital habitat for wildlife, protect clean water, and hold sacred cultural significance for Indigenous nations.

This final bill requires no environmental review, no public input, and only minimal consultation before these lands are sold. It even allocates $15 million in taxpayer money to make the sell-off happen. This is unacceptable and will have lasting negative impacts on our environment, recreation, and way of life.

As your constituent, I urge you to oppose this provision and protect our public lands for current and future generations.

PUBLIC LANDS ROUNDUP: THE UNSEEN GOODBYE

Since the start of 2025, public lands across the U.S. have faced policy rollbacks, budget cuts, and staffing cuts. From the introduction of “Unleashing American Energy” in January to the dismantling of environmental protections and critical agency operations, the federal government has moved swiftly to prioritize extraction and development over conservation.

Major staffing changes hit agencies like the National Park Service, BLM, and USFS, with thousands of employees reportedly fired or reassigned, and seasonal hiring temporarily frozen. Spending cuts reduced DOI employee budgets to just $1, basically bringing operations and maintenance to a stop.

March and April have only intensified the pace. Logging expansions were greenlit, national monuments are at risk for reductions, and more than 34 NPS building leases are set to be terminated. A new executive order empowers the Department of Defense to fast-track mineral extraction on federal lands, while the USDA has directed mass-scale logging with no regard for environmental impact. Despite these changes, the DOI Secretary has ordered all National Parks to remain open—raising questions about how they’ll operate safely with reduced budgets and staffing.
